HSU advances to final round with win over CSUDH

ARCATA — Lizzy Prescott shut down Cal State University Dominguez Hills on only two hits, striking out seven and walking two to send the Lumberjacks into Saturday's second game at the NCAA Division II West Region Softball Championships.

With the 8-1 win, HSU (51-18) advanced to take on unbeaten Western Oregon, a team that could wrap up the title with a win. If the Lumberjacks were to prevail, they'd face the Wolves again at 11 a.m. Sunday to determine the regional title.

The Lumberjacks unleashed a 13-hit attack on three Toros' pitchers, saddling starter Regina Farfan with the loss and ending her season with a 17-11 record. Cal State Dominguez Hills bowed out of the event, finishing the 2008 campaign at 31-24.

HSU took advantage of two CSUDH errors to take a 2-0 lead in the third inning, then added a single run in the sixth when Ashley Oltjenbruns doubled and scored on Chrissy Motzny's single.

The pair combined for more production in the seventh inning, Oltjenbruns clubbing a two-out, three-run homer and Motzny making it back-to-back with a solo shot over the right field fence. Nikki Ketteringham had started the rally with a double, then came home on Marissa Slattery's single as the Jacks put up five runs total in the inning.

Prescott (42-11) didn't allow a hit until Kristin Tanaka's fifth-inning single, which was misplayed in the outfield, allowing Tanaka to take second. A sacrifice bunt and ground out followed, accounting for the Toros' only run.
