ARCATA — Clutch hits, timely defense, and plain old power all contributed to No. 8 seed Cal State San Bernardino's 10-1 win over No. 1 seed Humboldt State at the NCAA Division II West Region Softball Championships on Wednesday.

The win sends the Coyotes into Thursday's 4:30 p.m. game against Cal State Dominguez Hills, while the host Lumberjacks will have to start their battle back when they face UC San Diego at 11:30 a.m. in an elimination game. CSUSB moves on with a 35-30-1 record, while the Jacks dropped to 47-18 overall.

Starting pitcher Lizzy Prescott, who was named Daktronics West Region Pitcher of the Year in a release sent out earlier in the day, struggled against a potent CSUSB offense that blasted three home runs, including Nicole Camerna's two-run shot that broke the scoreless tie in the fourth inning. HSU helped out the Coyotes' cause in the fifth with two errors, and Camarena singled to drive in two of the three unearned runs in that frame.

Humboldt started threatened to rally in the fourth, scoring a run on doubles from Natalie Galletly and Marissa Slattery, but a pop out and strikeout ended the frame. In the fifth, the Jacks put together consecutive singles, but rightfielder Jacquelyn Hotzclaw made a diving catch of Galletly's line drive and Franny West grounded out to end the inning.

Debbie Shisler earned the win from the pitching circle, evening her record at 6-6 by allowing only one hit and a walk in three innings of work. She had help from Jackie Jacob, Tawni Baker and Cassidy Lee, all of whom shared time in the pitching circle to limit the Jacks to five total his in the mercy-rule shortened game.

Along with Camarena, who totaled six RBIs, other hitting stars for the Coyotes included Tori Beaudette and Sara Bird, both of whom blasted home runs over the left field fence in the sixth inning.

Prescott dropped to 38-11, surrendering seven hits while striking out 10 and walking two in five innings. Hannah Jones pitched one inning for the Jacks, giving up three runs on four hits.
