Redhawks capitalize to stay alive at regional

ARCATA — Seattle University made the most of two hits, capitalizing on Cal State Monterey Bay miscues to earn a 4-2 win at the NCAA Division II West Region Softball Championships on Thursday.

With the win, the Redhawks (38-13) advance to Friday's 11:30 a.m. game where they'll take on the winner of Thursday's Humboldt State vs. UC San Diego game. As the first team eliminated, Cal State Monterey Bay's season ends with a 35-26 overall record.

Erin Martin earned the pitching win for Seattle, improving to 25-5 overall by scattering 11 hits for only two earned runs while striking out two and walking none. Angela Cabral, the first of two pitchers for the Otters, was the hard-luck loser, allowing only two hits and two earned runs while striking out three.

Seattle University capitalized on two of Cabral's mistakes in the opening inning to move up 2-0. Leaoff hitter Katie Antich got on board when she was hit by a pitch, and one batter later Jane Purdy homered to account for the damage.

From that point, the pitcher locked in a battle that last until the bottom of the fifth, when Purdy was hit by a pitch and scored on an error. Kaha Weir's two-out, pinch-hit double plated another run to move the Redhawks ahead, 4-0.

The top of the sixth inning saw a lengthy delay when CSU Monterey Bay shortstop Rachelle Morales was injured during a rundown. Morales was eventually transported via ambulance to the local hospital, with encouraging early reports on her status.

Morales' teammates responded in the sixth, putting together three straight singles for one run and loading the bases with no outs. But a forceout at home, a popup and line-out ended the inning with no further damage.

Cal State Monterey Bay added its second run in the bottom of the seventh on Shafii's solo homer before Martin retired the final three hitters to end the game.
