ARCATA — Lindsay Warren's second home run of the season broke a 1-1 tie, helping host Humboldt State remain alive with a 3-1 win over UC San Diego at the NCAA Division II West Region Softball Championships on Thursday.
Bouncing back from Wednesday's rough outing against CSU San Bernardino was HSU senior pitcher Lizzy Prescott, who held the Tritons to five hits and no earned runs, striking out eight and walking none to improve her record to 39-11. UC San Diego pitcher Melissa Ward gave up seven hits, striking out three and walking one to drop to 14-15, her team's season ending at 32-24.
Warren's low liner just over the fence inside the left field foul pole proved to be the difference, sending her team into Friday's 9 a.m. game against CSU Stanislaus. The freshman right fielder came into the game batting .229 and hits in the No. 9 spot in the lineup.
UC San DIego struck first Thursday, pushing a run across in the second inning when Danielle Lukk doubled, stole third base, and scored on an error. HSU rallied to tie the game fourth when Ashley Oltjenbruns' high pop fly dropped in short center, scoring Natalie Galletly.
HSU manufactured an insurance run with two outs in the sixth inning, starting with a walk to Chrissy Motzny. Geneva Perrine followed with a single to center, drawing the throw when she strayed past first and allowing Motzny to come home.
