ARCATA — Western Oregon put runs on the board in each of the first three innings, providing more than enough offense for pitcher Katie Fleer in a 7-0 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills at the NCAA Division II West Region Softball Championships on Friday.
The Wolves (33-16) emerged from the third day of competition as the lone unbeaten team, and they'll get a chance to claim the regional title at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. Their opponent will be determined in a preliminary game matching CSU Dominguez HIlls (30-24) against the winner of Friday's CSU San Bernardino-Humboldt State game.
Fleer went the distance, allowing only four hits and walking none while striking out 11 hitters. Her personal record improved to 21-5, while losing pitcher Regina Farfan, one of three hurlers employed by the Toros, dropped to 17-10.
Playing as the home team, Western Oregon struck for four runs in the bottom of the first inning, the key hit a two-out double off the bat of designated player Krysta Penington. The Wolves added two runs in the second on an RBI double from Jessica Hallmark and a single by Trina Dorn, with Whitney Lee's solo homer in the third accounting for the rest of the damage.
That was all Fleer needed, as she cruised through the final four innings, allowing only a leadoff single in the sixth inning the rest of the way.
