ARCATA — Westlake High School star Alec Hess and Army-Navy Academy standout Derrick Buchanan will play basketball for Humboldt State next season, HSU head coach Tom Wood announced.

Hess is a 6-5 wing/shooting guard who averaged 16 points, 12.1 rebounds and 2.7 blocked shots for the Westlake Warriors in 2008-09. He was honored as first-team All-Ventura County and was a first-team All-Miramonte League selection.

Buchanan, who averaged 14.5 points, 12.3 rebounds and 2.2 blocks per game last year, comes from the same Army-Navy program as Lumberjack teammate David Howard. Buchanan, a 6-6 post player, was a three-time All-Coastal Team North selection, two-time All-CIF Division 4 choice, and was named to the San Diego North All-Star team.

Both players should add to an already talented HSU squad that is coming off a 20-12 season that led to a berth in the NCAA Division II postseason. Humboldt State recently participated in the Kainan International Invitational in Taiwan, where the Lumberjacks earned the event championship.
