ARCATA — Humboldt State head volleyball coach Sue Woodstra has announced the signing of three key recruits for the 2010 season.
Bailey Kotas, Noel Eaton and Channel Washington will attend HSU and play for the Lumberjacks. The trio adds talent in critical roles that should help the Jacks move up in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
“Our new players are all coachable, have a good work ethic and will add a lot to our returning group,” Woodstra said. “These three, along with early signee Ashley Neale, will add much needed depth to the roster. We'll have much better competition in practice, spirited competitions amongst our team for playing time.”
Washington is a 5-7 outside hitter from Torrance. While competing for North High School, she was named Most Outstanding Player and received second-team all-league honors.
“(Washington) is very athletic, with great jumping ability and quickness,” Woodstra said. “She’s very explosive. We’re looking for Channel to work into being a multi-faceted player, able to play multiple positions.”
Eaton comes to HSU from Billings, Mont., where she starred for Billings Senior High for four years. She was awarded Academic All-State honors her junior and senior seasons, and earned the Sportsmanship award following the 2009 campaign.
A 6-foot right side hitter, Eaton helped her team claim the Montana state championship in 2008.
“(Eaton) is very good blocker, and will be a key addition in keeping the team's blocking and defense at the top of the conference,” Woodstra said. “She also has the ability to attack a variety of sets, and can play right side or middle. Noel is capable of stepping right in and making a contribution to the team next season.”
At Ramona High School, Kotas, a 5-11 setter, helped her team achieve the 2009 CIF Division II Championship. She was named CIF Player of the Year and also achieved all-league honors.
Kotas gained recognition for her scholarly pursuits, earning the HSSA Athlete Scholar award and being selected to the San Diego Union Tribune all-academic team.
“Bailey is a very steady person and player, who learns quickly,” Woodstra said “She brings good court experience and a strong work ethic to our program.”
The Lumberjacks report for practice on Aug. 15, and start their season Sept. 3 at the Western Oregon Tournament.
