The annual auction/dinner, officially titled the Annual Celebrity Dinner & Sports Auction, is a critical component of the Humboldt State athletics scholarship program. Every dollar raised at the auction since 2002 has gone toward scholarships for student-athletes. The event generates a net of close to $200,000 every year.

Boosters of the program are encouraged to participate in the auction by donating an item or by attending the event. The event is usually scheduled the last Saturday in March. (The exception is when that falls on Easter weekend, which pushes the event to the first Saturday in April.) Tickets are $100 each.

Since its inception in 1986, the auction has featured a guest speaker. Most of the speakers have been football-related, such as Steve Young, Bill Walsh, George Blanda, Jim Plunkett and Paul Hornung. But many have been from other sports, such as Olympic Gold Medalist Misty May, boxing legend Joe Frazier, former Laker Michael Cooper, and former member of the Dodgers and Giants, Dusty Baker.

Since 2002 the event has also featured an honored guest as an opportunity for HSU athletics to highlight an individual who has positively affected the program in some way.

The auction features more than 50 “live” auction items that can be week-long trips, catered dinners for 40, sports memorabilia or some other sought-after item. (Click on some of the pdf summaries for a listing of Top 10 items from that particular year.)  There are also 100 to 150 “silent” auction items.

In addition to items to bid on, attendees are given the opportunity to “cut to the chase” and make a direct donation to scholarships during the evening.
